Swap Sums is a number strategy game where students place integer tiles from the bottom of the board onto spaces on the grid to make the board “zero out” and clear. When a tile is placed, its value combines with the numbers in adjacent spaces, changing them immediately. For example, placing -3 next to +3 makes 0, and next to +9 makes +6. This game builds strong K–5 math thinking by reinforcing addition and subtraction as “changing a value,” making zero, and finding the missing addend (e.g., “What do I need to add to make this 0?”). Students practice mental math, place value reasoning (especially when numbers grow), and strategic planning by predicting how one move affects multiple spaces, developing early algebraic thinking through “if I put this here, what will happen next?”
